School Uniform

The children are wearing their winter uniform with pride and they look great, here are a few reminders.
Polar fleeces are to be worn outside the class only. We had been wearing these in class as we had the windows and doors open, now we have our air purifiers it will be warmer in class.
As it is getting a little chilly, the children may need to make sure they have their red knit jersey. They are able to put on their polar fleece when they go outside.
Jewellery - Earrings must be studs, religious and cultural jewellery is acceptable. No bracelets, anklets etc. Nail polish - Nail polish must not be worn to school.
Shoes - This information is from our Website.
In winter, boys wear grey knee high socks with black lace up leather school shoes and girls wear navy blue knee high socks or navy blue tights with black lace up leather school shoes or black Mary-Jane shoes - with a strap across the top of the foot.

We have Mass this week and it is expected that all children are in the correct uniform.

Cooking with Grandma Gail

Every week small groups of students have been learning to cook waffles with Grandma Gail. We only have a few groups to go then we will move on to learning a different recipe. If whanau have an idea, please discuss it with your child to bring the idea into class.

What else are the students learning during this time?
  • To work as a team.
  • Helping others.
  • To follow a recipe.
  • Communicating with peers and adults.
  • To sequence the steps through the images and text, as above.
  • Have fun!
Remember, R4 students are also very lucky to spend time with Viv on Fridays cooking the sausages for the school. Almost everyone has had a go at this now.

Tuesday 24 May 2022

Warmer Day tomorrow

During the winter terms R4 will be having Warmer day on Wednesdays. Students can bring something small wrapped in tinfoil to heat up for lunch in our mini oven. Some items the class thought might be suitable are:

  • sausage rolls
  • cookies
  • savouries
  • toasted sandwich
  • hashbrown...
Please remember that it is just to warm up - not cook. This is not compulsory, it's a choice ;-)

Birthday Celebrations

A message from the Totara teachers. We understand that many children like to celebrate their birthday by bringing in treats to share with their class.  With COVID still having a presence in our school we do not want to be sharing food in this way.   It is also a financial strain on some families who feel they must keep up with the birthday sharing tradition, and therefore we would ask you to celebrate birthdays at home.

Thank you,

Totara Teachers

It was great to see the students supporting Pink Shirt day on Friday. We will keep the conversations happening in class.

We are planning to have some toast and spreads available for students in the morning before school.  There may be students in our school arriving without breakfast and I also appreciate that from breakfast to morning tea is a long time. Bullying, knowing about it can help.

We discussed identifying bullying as  bullying as the following:

Whether bullying is physical, verbal, or social (relational), four widely-accepted factors can be used to identify it:
  • Bullying is deliberate - harming another person intentionally
  • Bullying involves a misuse of power in a relationship
  • Bullying is usually not a one-off - it is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated over time
  • Bullying involves behaviour that can cause harm - it is not a normal part of growing up.

Here is a short video we watched in class.

Continue the discussions. The best we can do is to educate and inform. As parents we should always be ready to listen and where possible teach through positive experiences, even when it might be tough.

MOre information can be found here.

Pink Day this Friday

On Friday we are wearing pink to show our support for stopping bullying. Please bring a gold coin donation.

In R4 we will start the learning tomorrow by exploring what makes us unique and how we all have our own superpowers.

Today James, Tamba and Lennox cooked some waffles with Grandma Gail. Apparently they did very well and even cleaned up after themselves.

We have crammed in a lot this week, our class has been super busy and everyone has been doing some fantastic learning.

We have made some manu tukutkuku (Maori kites) to help us learn about the Maori legend of Hatupatu and the Birdwoman.

We chopped up our giant pumpkin and we are giving it away. We have kept some seeds to plant next year as well.

Leonardo shared a wonderful piece of art that he has been working on at home.

We continued our waffle making with Grandma Gail, maybe some Mums will get waffles on Sunday?
